Module
October - December 2022
Istanbul, Türkiye
"How might we utilise the methods of scientific investigation in exploring the past, present, and future challenges of astronomy?"

During my second term at TGS, I stayed in Istanbul for two months and learnt about the history of astronomy in the Ottoman empire and how it has impacted our understanding of astronomy today. The course started with physics and astronomy lessons in order to understand the basics of the subjects before moving on to the historical and cultural contexts of astronomy in Türkiye. Over the course of the term I went on multiple excursions to museums, observatories, and workshops, and I went to a space camp for two days, learning about the practical application of astronomy in space exploration. I also learnt how to design and build my own functional telescope from scratch.
Exploring the history of astronomy and mathematics was a central focus of this module, offering valuable insights into the foundations of these disciplines. Beyond this, I also developed practical crafting skills, gaining an appreciation for how these intersect with science. The experience underscored the importance of precision and attention to detail, illustrating how craftsmanship and scientific principles work together to achieve accurate results.
