"How can we represent the culture of Malaysia and Sabah through writing, photography, and food?"
While staying in Malaysia in the months of July and August (2022), I learnt about Malaysian culture and history through photographing and writing about food. This started with an online photography course and practicing taking photos around the city of Kota Kinabalu. I visited many different communities (including Dusun, Bajau, Murut, and Chinese-Malay) around the area of Sabah in order to better understand the significance of food in each culture. I also took a 6 week-long cooking course to gain a better understanding of the importance of preparing food in a safe and responsible way. In addition to this, I regularly practiced food photography and journalism so as to improve on the necessary skills for my final product.
The final product of this project included a series of blog posts about local cuisine and a group session dedicated to cooking and photographing Malaysia’s national dish, Nasi Lemak.
Throughout my first project at Think Global School I learnt about Malaysian culture, history, and food, as well as enhancing my cooking, photography, and journalism skills. But more than that, I was able to experience what it means to lead a team and learnt how to collaborate on organising a project.
